Plants to reveal emergency plans

Southern Nevada's industries are revealing their own worst-case scenarios for chemical releases during a public hearing set for 7 tonight at the Henderson Convention Center.

As required by federal law, the companies have to assume a complete breakdown of procedures to handle hazardous chemicals on site. The idea is to get the industries to prevent accidents and prepare the public for the worst possibilities.

The federal government requires industries to release the information by Friday, but major local companies such as Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., Titanium Metals Corp. and Pioneer Chlor Alkali Co. plan to present their findings to the public.

The 13 Southern Nevada companies will also set up a website so residents can do their own research on chemicals, said Alonzo Robertson of R&R Advertising, which represents the industries.
