Prep volleyballers, swimmers honored

Western High School's Brock Mitchell and Las Vegas High's James Rogers have been named the Sunset and Sunrise Division Boys Volleyball Players of the Year, respectively, by area coaches.

Durango's Bob Kelly was selected Sunset Coach of the Year after leading the Trailblazers to a 16-0 conference mark. Las Vegas' Geno Frugoli was named Sunrise Coach of the Year after helping the Wildcats to an 11-game turnaround from last season.

The four-day 4A Southern Zone Boys Volleyball tournament begins today at Chaparral and concludes Saturday, with the championship slated for 12 p.m.

After winning two individual events at last week's 4A Southern Zone Swim Meet, Durango's Scott Weaver has been selected as the Sunset Division Boys Swimmer of the Year by area coaches. Trailblazer teammates Emily Simon and Lindsey Whipple shared Sunset Girls Swimmer of the Year honors. See list on page 6D.
