Weapons used to resolve conflicts

Quote: "We should resolve our conflicts with words not weapons." Since then many editorialists have expressed the same opinion. In Kosovo, Somalia, Bosnia, etc., did we use words or weapons?
Maybe words were used, but weapons were ultimately used. When the president says, "Use words, not weapons to resolve your conflicts," it reminds me of an adage ... "Do as I say, not as I do."
Would you send your sons and daughters to defend our freedoms with words ... or weapons? Maybe this does not apply in these two very different circumstances, but it sure leaves a lot of room for thought.
