Letter: Educational system is not working

One of Cram's ability would have to be a flunky of the new administrator; but the new administrator would not have to listen to him, especially if money is involved. If the bill passes, someone like one of our casino owners could become School Board president because being a good businessman is more important than knowing anything about the job.

This is the same Legislature that increased the math requirements for graduation effective immediately. Unfortunately those math skills were not yet included in the course requirements for graduation. Not only that, it is unlawful to teach the minimum-essentials test even though we teach prep courses for SAT and ACT and every college graduate level test there is. As the kids say, "Duh!"

Ever since the Russians put Sputnik into space, government has gone into orbit about controlling education. Big Government is evil, but everyone has been to school, so anyone knows how to run it.

Before the spaced-out states got hold of it, public education had as its main goal to educate every citizen to participate in our democracy. This means a citizen must be able to evaluate the candidates and cast an intelligent vote. That public education has been successful is evident because only half the graduates choose to vote for anyone at all.
