Letter: Southwest Medical wins, patients lose when nurses fired

In a recent press release the profits of Sierra Health, the parent company, were said to be good. Does this make sense?

The nurses who are being terminated are registered nurses who provide direct patient care, follow a provider's patients while they are at the hospital, manage chronic disease, educate and take the time to sit down with patients and help them truly understand their illness.

Do providers have the time to do this? The answer is a resounding no. The demands put on providers at Southwest are tremendous.

I have worked at Southwest for more than 7 years and have enjoyed moving up the ranks. In spite of my opportunities, I feel it is endangering patient care without having a registered nurse in the facility.

The only good thing about the nurses losing their jobs is it will improve the bottom line for Southwest Medical Associates.
