Demographer’s contract won’t be renewed

CARSON CITY -- State Demographer Dean Judson, who has forecast Nevada's population for the last four years, is leaving his job June 30 and will take a position in a Reno consulting firm.

State Taxation Director David Pursell said Tuesday Judson's contract expires at the end of June and he wants to open up the process to allow others to seek the job. The taxation department supplies $151,000 a year to fund the office, which estimates Nevada's present and future growth trends.

Pursell said his decision not to automatically renew the contract had nothing to do with Judson's work. Judson, he said, could reapply for the job and would "be judged on his merits."

The office will remain at the business college at the University of Nevada, Reno because it has a wealth of resources to aid in the population projections, Pursell said.
