Letter: Laws won’t stop violent gun use

The Brady bill was praised as a piece of responsible legislation that would prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. Did the Brady bill prevent the tragegy at Littleton, Colo.? Not by far.

Nor will these recent absurd laws, passed by the Senate, curtail America's obsession with violence (the true factor that contributes to tragedies like Littleton) that is influenced by the garbage put out by the motion picture industry.

In his May 23 column, Brian Greenspun asked, "Do children have to be shot and killed before responsible legislation makes its way through Congress and the various state legislatures?"

He seems to feel that we Americans have won this tie. What I feel is that we have recieved more "feel good" legislation that will no more prevent another Littleton than the current drug laws prevent drugs from reaching our streets. What we have is another step that takes us closer to the ultimate goal of the Socialist liberals: The total disarming of American citizens.

The real solution to this problem is 1) Start enforcing the 20,000 gun laws that are on the books now. 2) Put restrictions on the motion picture and vidieo game industry on the level of violent content that so glorifies the use of firearms. 3) Finally, let's get back to the basics. The family working together as a unit. Parents have to stop being "best friends" to their children and get back to the buisness of parenting.

There is no law that will make this happen without this concept that liberals hate so much: Personal responsibility.
