The money is provided in AB342, which also provides another $3.6 million to pay for completely redesigned plates. The bill was recommended for passage Tuesday.
The bill establishing a process for Nevadans to get the old style of plates, featuring white numbers and letters on a blue background, that were issued before 1982.
Earlier efforts to retire the plates because some are worn and hard to read met with strong resistance from Nevadans who regard them as a status symbol of their longtime residency.
AB342 will allow residents to buy new blue plates with the same numbers if they want them, with a fee of up $25 for the service.
