Police say they are closer to arrest in two-year-old murder

Police Chief Clair Morris said on Tuesday that his department is working toward obtaining warrants for two people.

And District Attorney Gary Woodbury agrees that witnesses who have come forward as recently as this week are helping to resolve the killings of Gerald Spaeth, 35, and 24-year-old Elza Wire.

Both Morris and Woodbury said investigators have been looking at old information in new ways to link the suspects in a drug-related murder conspiracy.

They said neither of the people they suspect is in Elko County at this time.

The killings occurred in the early morning hours of May 24 when a gunman entered the restaurant shortly after it closed.

Spaeth was a shift manager who was counting receipts.

As the gunman was leaving with about $400, Wire came to investigate the gunshots and was killed. An employee who was washing dishes apparently was not seen by the gunman.
