Veterans get own separate agency again

The veterans' affairs office has been under the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety for several years. Veterans asked they again be given their own office outside DMV.

SB263 creates an office of veterans' services as a cabinet level position reporting directly to the governor.

"This is what the veterans wanted and we think it's fair," said Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas.

The bill goes to Gov. Kenny Guinn, who just named Ray Alcorn, 59, of Carson City as state commissioner for veteran affairs.

Alcorn is a former Navy pilot who spent seven years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. He later served as chief of staff for the Naval Air Training Command and as commanding officer of the Naval Air Station in Fallon.
