Security guard, suspect wounded in shootout

Donald Ray Williams, 35, of North Las Vegas, was reported in critical condition at University Medical Center with several gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

North Las Vegas Police Sgt. Michael Judd said two security guards were called to the Buena Vista Springs Apartments early Saturday on a report of a disturbance.

Police said the security guards, Justin Dixon, 25, and John J. Hughes Jr., 36, had been called to the apartment several times before.

Judd said Hughes was escorting a man from the disturbance when the man wrestled Hughes' handgun away from him, then pointed the gun at him.

As Dixon came to Hughes' assistance the man fired shots at Dixon and Dixon returned the fire.

Dixon suffered a gunshot wound to the arm in the exchange. Hughes was not injured.

The incident marked the latest in a series of violent exchanges involving Southern Nevada security guards.

Four security guards have been killed, one injured and one raped in incidents the past three years.
