Green Valley student goes for national honor

Abby Miller, a senior at Green Valley High School, is one of 12 national finalists vying for the High School Heisman Award given by Wendy's restaurants.

She surpassed more than 12,000 high school seniors to become a finalist for the scholar-athlete award. A panel of judges that included former Heisman Trophy winners selected the finalists.

Miller has competed on Green Valley's varsity cross country, track and swim teams. She is an All-American in cross country and track and was named to the All-League swimming team.

She also serves on a variety of school academic clubs and is a community service volunteer.

Two national winners of the award will be announced during an ESPN live broadcast of the College Heisman Memorial Trophy at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City on Dec. 11.

Miracle Flights will benefit from event

The Galaxy of Northern Stars dinner and silent auction will begin 6 p.m. Saturday at the MGM Grand Conference Center.

Tickets are $100. Proceeds support Miracle Flights for Kids and the North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation. To RSVP, call 642-9595.

Harvest Festival set at visitors center

The Red Rock Canyon Harvest Festival will be held noon-4 p.m. Saturday at the Red Rock Visitors Center. Cost is $5 per vehicle for admission to the park.

There will be crafts, natural history demonstrations on mammals and reptiles of the area with live creatures, wildland fire safety and much more. Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl will be present. Call 363-1922.

Hospice to honor civic leaders at event

Four Las Vegas women -- Thalia Dondero, Avis Jansen, Kitty Rodman and Claudine Williams -- will receive Nathan Adelson Hospice's Monarch Awards during a black-tie event at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Mirage ballroom.

Ticket prices are $250, and sponsorships are available. Proceeds will benefit Nathan Adelson Hospice's Bonnie Schreck Memorial Comfort Care Program.

Seminar planned on avoiding being victims

A free seminar for senior citizens on financial scams and crime prevention will be offered 3 p.m. Nov. 16 at Montcliff Community Center, 4175 S. Decatur Blvd.

The seminar, sponsored by Montcliff, Metro Police and the state attorney general's office, will show seniors how to protect themselves from becoming victims of consumer fraud, robberies, muggings, auto theft and other crimes. Call 947-6245.

Holiday bazaar raising money for organization

The Las Vegas Blind Center is holding its annual holiday bazaar 9 a.m.-3 p.m. through Thursday at 1001 N. Bruce St.

Christmas decorations, baskets, wreaths and decorated tins are being offered as well as beaded and ceramic Christmas tree decorations.

Henderson will host second annual program

Henderson will host its second annual Pet Affair Adopt-A-Thon 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

The event will take place at the Henderson Animal Shelter, 390 Athens Ave. The program will include a variety of performances on stage. In addition, a pet-tricks contest will be held with a first place prize of $100 awarded for the most amazing animal trick. Call 565-2033.

Adoption fair

A countywide adoption fair, a major recruitment effort aimed at attracting prospective adoptive parents and finding homes for children waiting for adoptive families, will take place 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

Book fair

The Las Vegas Jewish Book Fair will feature books, authors, speakers and shopping Sunday through Nov. 21 at Ner Tamid, 2761 Emerson St. Call 794-0090.

Bake sale

The Las Vegas Valley Humane Society will host a bake sale 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Petco, 2091 N. Rainbow Blvd. Call 648-5175.

Immunizations

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Nov. 10 - 16:
