Mapes protest finds little support

Eight people turned up on Tuesday and were gone less than half an hour later.

It was the second protest by members of Truckee Meadows Heritage Trust preservation group. Another is scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday in front of the Mapes.

The 52-year-old Virginia Street landmark has been dark since 1982 and is scheduled for demolition Jan. 30.

The eight protesters never entered City Hall. Instead, they raised signs as traffic passed on Center Street and asked people walking by if they wanted to sign a petition.

Heritage Trust members hope to get 6,000 signatures by January to put the demolition of the Mapes Hotel on the ballot.

The council voted Sept. 14 to demolish the Mapes Hotel as part of its riverfront redevelopment efforts.
