Temporary hearings office to open Jan. 18

The Social Security hearings office in Las Vegas, scheduled to open Jan. 18 in a temporary office at the Post Office building at 301 East Stewart St. should free Southern Nevadans from waiting for an out-of-state judge to hear Social Security appeals.

Prior to the creation of the new office, announced in June by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Southern Nevadans had limited access to judges from Arizona and California.

The new hearings office, where people can appeal decisions made by the Social Security Administration on eligibility for benefits, is expected to alleviate the backlog of cases, according to Reid's office. More than 250,000 Nevadans collect more than $2 billion each year under Social Security cash benefit programs.

The permanent location for the hearings office will be the Foley Federal Building on Las Vegas Boulevard South later next year.

Marine Corps honored at anniversary dinner

Marine Col. Mel Siese will speak at a dinner for the Navy League 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Elks Club, 4400 W. Charleston Blvd., in honor of the 224th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, which was Wednesday.

Seniors will get class in technology

An Internet class for senior citizens is being offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Boulder Station.

The hotel's director of information technology, David Krause, and representatives of CompUSA will teach seniors how to get the most out of the Internet. Light refreshments will be served.

Event planned for Alzheimer's Association

Chancellor Gardens of the Lakes will hold a food drive 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday at 2620 Lake Sahara Drive to benefit the families and friends of the Alzheimer's Association Southern Nevada Chapter and the Parkinson's Support Group.

Nonperishable food items may be dropped off. Each person bringing a donation will receive a free ice cream treat. Call 233-9800 for more information.

Treadmill workouts on tap in Henderson

Treadmill Turkey Trot will be hosted 4-8 p.m. Wednesday by the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., Henderson.

Participation is open to adults 18 years and older for $3 per 30 minute run.

According to research conducted at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee, the motorized treadmill burns more calories and results in a more effective cardiovascular workout than six other pieces of indoor exercise equipment. Call 565-2121.

Seminar scheduled to educate public

The law office of Mainor and Harris will sponsor a seminar at 7 p.m. Wednesday by the Nevada Association of Residential Communities discussing how changes in the Nevada Construction Defect Law have affected homeowners.

Jewish center seeks athletes for competition

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada is seeking Jewish teenagers to be part of its delegation to the JCC Maccabee Games.

The Southern Nevada delegation will compete in the games Aug. 3-9, 2000, in Tucson, Ariz.

The selected sport events are soccer, basketball, in-line hockey, volleyball, bowling, chess, dance, golf, gymnastics, karate, swimming, table tennis, track and field, raquetball and wrestling.
