Council to consider dividing city into 4 wards

North Las Vegas is steps closer to becoming a city divided.

An ordinance will be introduced at Wednesday night's City Council meeting which, if adopted Dec. 1, will divide the city into four equal wards for the 2001 election.

A bill by the 1999 Legislature mandates for the first time in North Las Vegas history that the city divide into four equal wards. The ordinance, based on population estimates as of July 1, would have each council member responsible for an average of 28,572 constituents.

Although residents will continue to vote for candidates at large, candidates will have to live in the ward from which they run.

Residents expressed concern at a public forum Oct. 25, fearing that the map was divided unfairly, leaving some areas with greater potential for growth than others.

Retired Wisconsin Judge Frederick Kessler was hired as the city's consultant on the project in June for a fee of $15,000. He also created the redistricting map for the city of Las Vegas.
