One man in critical condition

Two men shot near a downtown area convenience store Saturday night remain hospitalized this morning at University Medical Center, one in critical condition, the other in fair condition.

Metro Police arrived at the store at Fremont and 21st streets about 11:30 p.m. to find a man who said he and his father, who is now in critical condition, had been shot by someone in a white van.

Police found the second victim a short distance away in front of 81 N. 21st St..

Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to call detectives at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Nevada expects settlement funds soon

Nevada could see its first part of the national tobacco settlement by the end of this month, according to Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa.

A payment of $14.6 million represents Nevada's share of an initial payment following the signing of a master settlement agreement, Del Papa said.

In all, Nevada is scheduled to receive nearly $1.2 billion through 2025 as a result of the settlement.

Residents warned not to get trimmed

Nevada Power Co. is warning residents about a group trying to scam money for tree trimming.

Nevada Power routinely trims trees that interfere with overhead electric lines, but recently trimmers identifying themselves as Nevada Power employees have attempted to get customers to pay for tree trimming. The service is free to Nevada Power customers.
