Initial phase of hotel-casino approved

HENDERSON -- The Henderson Planning Commission Thursday approved the first phase of a 72-acre business-themed hotel-casino complex near the Sunset Road commercial corridor.

The Commission voted 6-0 to approve one lot on 22.3 acres at the southwest corner of Marks Street and Warm Springs Road in the first phase of the planned Vineyards development, which seeks to attract business travelers.

The first phase includes a six-story, 220-room hotel; a 50,783-square-foot restaurant and casino; a 14,420-square-foot office building and a three-story parking garage.

Developer the Dunn Companies plans an Embassy Suites Hotel on the site. It will be one of two hotels at the complex, said George Garcia, who represented the developer.

The Vineyards project will bring prestige to Henderson, he said.

"I think this will help put Henderson on the map," Garcia said. "This is not just another hotel, this is a crown jewel. A lot of communities can't even get an Embassy Suites hotel. This is recognition that Henderson has come of age and is not just a bedroom community anymore."

Construction is expected to start by mid-2000, with the opening planned for the summer or fall of 2001, Garcia said.

The Vineyards goes before the City Council on Dec. 21.
