Letter: Hispanics again get passed over for council seat

Reese nominated his city liaison, Lawrence Weekly, who is black, to sit in Ward 5. Now we have two blacks and three whites representing the city of Las Vegas. In the 10 years that I have lived in Las Vegas there has not been a Hispanic sitting in a council seat. The Hispanic leaders and community have to stand up, get their act together and be counted.

The greatest chance we have in voting a Hispanic into the City Council will be in Ward 3, Reese's ward, and in Ward 5. The Hispanics are one of the fast growing minorities in the country and we still do not have the voting power. The Hispanic community and leaders have to stop kissing up to the white politicians and stand behind our own in order to get ahead.

The Hispanic community is not considered a political threat and therefore not taken seriously. We will always be in the background unless we start doing something about it now. We have until the year 2001 to change this disparity of representation.

Remember when Arnie Adamsen lost his seat in Ward 2 when he ran for mayor and lost to Oscar Goodman? The City Council felt that it had to select a black to appease the black community. Need I say more?
