Local news briefs for November 22, 1999

Metro Police are searching for a man who was involved in a failed restaurant robbery that left his partner dead on Friday.

Police said that about 4:30 p.m. Friday two men with handguns entered the El Ausente Mexican Restaurant, 2536 Fremont St., and demanded money. They were confronted by the restaurant owner with a gun after they had pistol whipped one patron and were forcing others in the restaurant into the bathroom.

Police said the owner and one of the robbers shot at each other. Both were taken to University Medical Center, where Luciano Guadalupe Sanchez-Jimenez, 19, died from his injuries. The restaurant owner was in stable condition this morning.

The other man, who fled the scene, is described as in his early 20s, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 4 inches tall with a medium build and a shaved head.

Anyone with information on this robbery is asked to call police at 229-3591 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Car hits pole in Henderson

A woman died and three people remain hospitalized at University Medical Center after an accident Sunday afternoon in Henderson.

A car carrying six people veered off Lake Mead Drive into a power pole near Golda Way, Henderson Police said.

The woman, who was a passenger in the car, died at the scene, and two men and a child remain at UMC. Two others were treated and released, police said.

No names of the victims were released until family members can be notified.

Police suspect a homicide

Metro Police say they found some evidence near skeletal remains discovered in a desert area Saturday night to indicate a homicide.

A man found the remains in an area about six to eight miles from Moapa off of Interstate 15. The remains were taken to the Clark County corner's office to determine the identity of the victim, police said.

Police would not reveal what evidence was found to indicate a homicide.

Las Vegas, county name media officers

The city of Las Vegas and the county have hired new people in their media relations departments.

Las Vegas has hired the assignment manager at Las Vegas One, Erik Pappa, to serve as the senior public information officer for the city manager's office. Pappa is scheduled to start on Dec. 6 and reportedly will earn $63,000 a year.

Before joining Las Vegas One Pappa spent four years as the planning editor at KLAS Channel 8 and worked as a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun.

Clark County has named Hilarie Grey as new media relations manager for the county's airports. That appointment also becomes effective Dec. 6.

Grey, who previously was an administrator in the county manager's office, takes over the information job for McCarran International Airport and the aviation facilities in North Las Vegas, Henderson and Jean.

Prior to joining Clark County in 1996, Grey spent three years as a development project officer for the city of Las Vegas.

Work to be done on U.S. 95, I-15

Work crews will slow traffic on both U.S. 95 and Interstate 15 early this week.

Starting tonight at 9 traffic on southbound I-15 will be detoured onto Craig Road for temporary bridge work and placement of temporary beams on an overpass.

The construction will continue until 5 a.m. Tuesday and resume Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Crews will also be repairing a barrier rail on U.S. 95 southbound, closing the left travel lane between Rancho Drive and Valley View Boulevard on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
