Indiana 67, No. 5 Temple 59

Haston scored seven of his 20 points during a 9-0 second-half run and Guyton added 22 points as Indiana beat No. 5 Temple 67-59 Friday night in the Tip-Off Classic.

"It was a good win for us. I liked the way we played defense," coach Bobby Knight said. "Haston and Guyton, the two of them, saved us."

Guyton hit four 3-pointers in the first half to help Indiana take an early lead and Haston held Temple off in the second half.

"We were off to a really good start," Knight said. "But a good Temple team wasn't fazed. They came back and forced us into some errors."

Haston hit a pair of layups, a jumper and a free throw during the Hoosiers' 9-0 run that gave them a 49-40 lead with 10:41 remaining.

"Indiana plays the game the right way," Temple coach John Chaney said. "They kick the ball inside. Then they throw it outside to the people who can shoot."

Haston added nine rebounds, six in the second half, for the Hoosiers.

Lynn Greer, who led Temple (1-1) with 25 points, answered with a pair of 3-pointers and Quincy Wadley got free on a layup to pull the Owls to 49-48 with 8:37 left.

Guyton hit a long 3 with 5:48 left to put Indiana ahead 54-50.

Temple fought back on a pair of free throws by Mark Karcher and a 3-pointer by Greer to close to 56-55 a minute later.

But then Kirk Haston was fouled on a driving basket and completed the three-point play and Guyton wriggled through Temple's defense for a layup to extend the lead to 61-55 with 2:41 left.

A jumper by Lamont Barnes with 1:15 left was the last scoring Temple could manage against a smothering Indiana defense.

Greer hit six 3-pointers for Temple, which was playing without point guard Pepe Sanchez, who sprained his ankle earlier in the week.

"I seemed to have a hot hand for a while, but it's still hard to concentrate on shooting when you know you have to do the things on offense that Pepe would ordinarily do," Greer said. "It was up to me and Quincy to run the offense, something we are not used to doing."

Chaney said without Sanchez, Temple's usually high-scoring forwards, Karcher and Barnes, couldn't get the ball to score.

Karcher shot 4-of-13 for 12 points and Barnes scored 10 on 5-for-12 shooting.

"(Sanchez's) loss was important, because we had to put shooting guards into Sanchez's point guard position and Sanchez is the best point guard in America," Chaney said. "As a result, Indiana keyed on our backcourt. That was crucial."

Temple had just seven assists. Sanchez averaged more than 5.8 per game last season.

Indiana struck early from outside, building an 18-7 lead on four 3-pointers within the first three minutes, including two by Guyton.

"We didn't keep our eye on Guyton early," Chaney said.
