Safety overdue on dangerous crossing

In March, Nevada Department of Transportation officials told the Reno City Council that a crosswalk and safety lights would be in place on North Virginia Street near the Bonanza Casino by late spring.

The promise came shortly after a 61-year-old man and his wheelchair-bound wife became the latest victims on the unlit road in front of the casino.

"The state is shirking its responsibility to drivers and pedestrians," City Councilwoman Sherrie Doyle said.

"We've had three deaths there this year. We've more than demonstrated a need for the improvements."

NDOT officials said they remain committed to the improvements.

"Due to limited crew size, (the project) should be finished by mid- to late-December," said NDOT resident engineer Dave Titzel.
