Tapes donated to school district libraries

Bill Mors, producer of the Las Vegas history videotapes "Remember Las Vegas," gave 250 complete sets of the tapes to Clark County School District libraries to further promote education of Las Vegas history.

The sets include stories of the Strip's growth and profiles of early Las Vegas personalities as well as the history of Fremont Street, Hoover Dam and various Las Vegas entertainers.

Building director official of the year

Robert D. Weber, director of the Clark County Building Department, received the Phil Roberts "Code Official of the Year Award" presented by the International Conference of Building Officials.

The award recognizes building officials for their continued leadership of and service to building safety and building code development field.

Weber has been an active member of the professional service organization for more than 21 years and a member of its board of directors for seven years. He has been the county building department's director for 20 years.

Sloan named new state director of group

Carla Sloan, former administrator for the Division for Aging Services at the Nevada Department of Human Resources, has been named new state director for the American Association of Retired Persons.

There are nearly 200,000 AARP members in Nevada.

Sloan has served on the Senior Citizen's Advisory Group for Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., and as an advisory member of the State Legislature's Health Committee and Subcommittee on Seniors and Persons with Disabilities.

As administrator for Division for Aging Services, Sloan was involved in projects such as Medicaid Home, Community-Based Care Waiver Programs, Caregiver Training Programs and the Senior Medicare Patrol Project.

Actress to attend Southern Utah University

A senior theater arts major from Las Vegas will attend Southern Utah University during the 1999-2000 academic year courtesy of the Robin Bishop Memorial Scholarship.

Melinda Pfundstein, a graduate of Las Vegas High School and an actress who has taken roles in the Utah Shakespearean Festival the last two years, received the annual scholarship created in memory of the late Robin Bishop, a 1981 SUU theater arts graduate.

Deputy AG named head of organization

Senior Deputy Attorney General Tim Terry was elected president of the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Control Units.

The national group is composed of representatives from the 47 control units throughout the country.

Terry has been director of the Nevada Medicaid Fraud Control Unit since its inception in 1991 and will be joined on the executive board by Medicaid Fraud Control Unit directors from Oregon, Hawaii, New Mexico, Indiana, New Jersey, South Carolina and Rhode Island.

Milestone operation performed at UMC

Dr. Barry Fisher, director of the Surgical Weight Control Center at University Medical Center, performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery in Nevada last month.

Traditional surgery requires an incision of 12 to 24 inches, whereas the laparoscopic method needs only a 5- to 6 1/2-inch incision.

The first laparoscopic gastric bypass was perform in the U.S. two years ago. UMC is one of 30 hospitals in the country that offers the surgery.

Help filling food boxes needed

The Salvation Army is looking for employee groups, service clubs and professional organizations to help fill food boxes.

The boxes are filled to feed a family of four for one week. The Salvation Army is hoping to have thousands of boxes filled for needy families during the holiday season and throughout the next year.

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Oct. 27 - Nov. 2:

EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PARADISE PARK CLINIC: Recreation Center, 4770 Harrison Drive, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday.
