Ex-Henderson mayor arrested on drug, sex charges

Groesbeck, 38, was booked late Friday into the Clark County Detention Center for investigation of open and gross lewdness, battery on a police officer and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Groesbeck, who served as mayor of Nevada's third largest city from 1993 to 1997, was released Saturday afternoon. Bond information wasn't available.

Police said the incident began when a female patron at Mandalay Bay notified hotel security that a man had repeatedly stuck his hand down her blouse.

"He was groping a female who he didn't even know," Las Vegas police spokesman Steve Meriwether said. "He was going up to her and fondling her."

Security called police to the resort's exclusive House of Blues Foundation Room and a scuffle broke out when officers tried to arrest Groesbeck there.

"He got into an altercation with one of our sergeants and he punched him," Meriwether said. "Our sergeant ended up with an injury on his head, a lump."

A field test revealed the suspect was under the influence of some kind of drug, Meriwether said.

When Groesbeck announced two years ago that he wasn't going to seek re-election, he said he wanted to spend more time with his wife and two young daughters.

He's general counsel for Silver State Disposal Service Inc., which provides garbage service in the Las Vegas Valley.
