Fire breaks out in house where man barricaded himself

It was not clear how the man died, said police spokesman Steve Meriwether.

Authorities believe the man had weapons but could not confirm what type, he said.

Clark County firefighters kept their distance as the house burned but hosed down nearby homes in the area near Red Rock and Spring Mountain Road as a precaution.

As SWAT team members escorted firefighters inside the house, they heard a loud blast and retreated, said fire Capt. Ed Beaman. The source of the blast has not been determined.

Some family members were gathered outside the home, some of them crying. They declined comment.

Police received a call about a domestic disturbance and arrived to find a 28-year-old man alone in the home around 10 a.m. Sunday. Police negotiators established phone contact shortly after noon. Negotiations continued until about 4 p.m. when the SWAT team fired tear gas into the home. Soon after, the house caught fire.

The man's name was not immediately released.
