Phone companies lose licenses

Fifty-six Nevada telecommunications companies that failed to submit annual financial reports to the Public Utilities Commission have lost their licenses to operate in the state.

Commissioners approved an order at the request of the PUC's regulatory operations staff that identified the delinquent companies.

Telephone companies are required by state regulations to file a financial statement that includes income and cash flow statements and a balance sheet every year by May 15. The report also must identify where the company is operating and how many customers it has.

Most of the 56 companies have operated as service resellers in Nevada.

Each of the companies received two separate letters by certified mail from the PUC apprising them of their failure to file. The PUC also scheduled a hearing on the license revocation. A spokeswoman for the PUC said some of the companies were out of business or had been acquired by other companies.

At an Aug. 26 hearing, none of the 56 companies attended. One company notified the PUC that it was voluntarily canceling its license.
