The Asylum Theatre is holding a fund-raiser at 7 p.m. Friday in the Winchester Theatre, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

The Asylum is bringing in Dick Sergeant's Improv of Los Angeles, which has performed at Second City and The Improv Olympics. Tickets are $10. Call 893-8980.

National recognition day ceremony planned

A ceremony in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day is scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday at Nellis Air Force Base.

The day is to honor former American prisoners of war and those whose fate is still undetermined. For more information, call 652-2750.

Wrigley to give talk, poetry reading

Poet Robert Wrigley will give a lecture and poetry reading at two locations Friday.

Sponsored by the Community College of Southern Nevada literary magazine "Red Rock Review," Wrigley will speak on "Making Certain: On the Life and Poetry of Richard Hugo," at 1 p.m. in the lecture hall at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. Call 878-3628.

Retired executives to hold workshop

The Senior Corps of Retired Executives will present its next "Starting A New Business" workshop at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the new Business Information Center, 1951 N. Stella Lake Drive.

Counselors will cover marketing, cash flow, record keeping, the business plan and a check list for licensing, permits and other requirements. Cost $30 if prepaid or $35 at the door. Call 388-6104.

Bring food donations to Crafter's Village

The Salvation Army will collect food items at the Crafter's Village Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Cashman Center.

The group will offer discounts off the festival's ticket price in exchange for donations. Call 870-4430, Ext. 18.

Hikes and other special programs planned

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Some coming programs:

Geology from a Distance: Join a program on Friday to learn about great geologic events that changed the face of Red Rock. Touch fossils and feel the surface of stone from the time of ancient seas.

Basic Map and Compass Reading:A program on Saturday will teach those needed skills in the outdoors. Maps and compasses will be provided.

Mountain Bike Nature Ride: This 4-mile easy ride on Saturday is the first mountain bike nature ride offered and will travel through classic Mojave Desert vegetation. Bring your bike, a helmet, water and a snack.

Anasazi Millennium: A 3-mile moderately easy hike Saturday to see artifacts left behind at the Willow Spring encampment and talk about the history of the Early Native.

Community forum scheduled at UNLV

The UNLV Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies is sponsoring a community forum at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 to discuss the need to reinvent the modern homeowner association.

Noted national expert, attorney and author Wayne Hyatt, a longtime member and past president of the Community Association Institute, will lead the discussion at Artemus Ham Hall at UNLV.

Social mixer

The Asian Chamber of Commerce will hold its second social mixer of 1999, "It Takes Two to Tango," 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Caribbean Cabana, 3190 W. Sahara Ave. Call 873-3345.

Walkathon at UNLV will benefit foundation

The 15th annual Walk to Cure Diabetes benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Participants will start at the Judy Bailey Theatre at UNLV. No traffic, no major intersections, and lots of pleasant shady areas will be available as walkers follow the trail around the university.

All participants raising $75 or more will receive a "Walk to Cure Diabetes" T-shirt. All walkers raising $100 and more will receive a ticket to a UNLV football game. Other prizes are available too. Walkers are still welcome. Call 732-4795.
