Lander County to keep county manager's post

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. - Lander County Commissioners have ended the debate over the need for a county manager by voting to retain the position.

"We need a focal point," Commission Chairman Cheryl Lyngar said at Monday's meeting.

She said the three commissioners can't run the county like the board of directors of a corporation because they can't meet together on problems without violating Nevada's Open Meeting Law.

Commissioner Mickey Yarbro said, "When I ran for office, I said I would not make a quick decision that would cost the county more money in the long run. The position is needed."

Commissioner Bill Elquist, who abstained from the 2-0 vote, has opposed the manager's position in the past, but complimented the job the county manager's staff was doing.

"I'm sure we could get by without a county manager if we had to," he said. "If we have money to pay, keep it."
