State jobless rate up slightly in August

The seasonally adjusted rate matches the national August rate, and is nearly a point under neighboring California's 5.1 percent rate.

There were about 41,200 Nevadans out of work in August, down from 41,500 in July. There were 977,400 people working in Nevada during August, up from 966,800 a month earlier.

While the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation report shows a generally stable state economy and many job opportunities, mining was down another 400 workers in August, to 12,100 statewide.

On a month-to-month basis, the casino-related service industry was up 6,300 jobs; trade was up 2,100; construction was up 1,600 jobs; manufacturing was up 400; transportation-utilities was up 700; and finance-insurance-real estate was up 100.

Government was down about 200 jobs between July and August.

The metropolitan Las Vegas unemployment rate in August was 4.5 percent, unchanged from July.

In the Reno area, the August jobless rate was 3 percent, also unchanged from July.

The state report also showed August unemployment rates of 4.2 percent in Carson City and 4 percent in the Elko-Eureka counties area. Monthly rates for other areas of the state weren't listed.
