Etbauer wins second straight saddle bronc round

Etbauer, of Ree Heights, S.D., edged his brother, Robert Etbauer of Goodwell, Okla., by a point. Dan Mortensen of Manhattan, Mont., was third with an 84.

"I heard he was a pretty good horse," Billy Etbauer said of Skoal's Back Door. "But every horse here is good. I was just glad to get by."

Billy Etbauer, the world champion in 1992, 1996 and 1999, entered the rodeo in second place in the world standings. He was bucked off in the first round Friday night and fell further behind when leader Scott Johnstone of Gustine, Texas, won the round.

Johnston hasn't placed since then, and Billy Etbauer has claimed $26,266 to pull within $13,364.

"I'm just hoping to stay healthy and keep riding good," he said. "I don't watch any of that stuff. There are a lot of people here that deserve to win the world title."

In bareback, James Boudreaux of Cuero, Texas, won the round with an 84. Deb Greenough of Red Lodge, Mont., was second at 83, and Clint Corey of Powell Butte, Ore., and Chris Harris of Arlington, Texas, tied for third at 82.

In bull riding, Rob Bell of Canada; Robey Condra of Dayton, Texas; and Cory Check of Eastman, Wis., tied for first with 85s.

In steer wrestling, Sid Steiner of Austin, Texas, won the round with a 3.6-second run. Sean Mulligan of Laramie, Wyo., was second in 3.7 seconds, and world leader Rod Lyman of Victor, Mont., was third in 3.8 seconds. Doug Pharr of Resaca, Ga., and Stran Smith of Tell, Texas, tied for first in calf roping at 8.3 seconds.

Bobby Hurley of Ceres, Calif., and Tyler Magnus of Llano, Texas, won their second straight round of team roping with a 4.8- second run. Wade Lockett of Hughson, Calif., and Kyle Lockett of Ivanhoe, Calif., were second in 5.0 seconds.

Jaime Richards of Bastrop, Texas, won the barrel racing with a 13.91-second run. Charmayne James of Gustine, Texas, was second in 13.94.
