Editorial: Even bureaucracy can't hold up Santa

It is encouraging that the U.S. Department of Transportation has given the go-ahead to Santa Claus for his Christmas Eve deliveries. The official clearance should allow all the good little boys and girls of the nation to sleep easier tonight.

In his flight certificate application, Santa Claus noted that his sleigh will be powered by eight tiny reindeer. But the jolly old soul did assure regulators that in the event of fog or heavy snow that he may have to use a ninth reindeer, Rudolph. It was Rudolph's shiny red nose, which also serves as a special air navigation warning light, that apparently eased the concerns of federal safety officials about the readiness of Santa Claus' sleigh.

For that matter, it is hoped that the good sense demonstrated by the Clinton administration in approving Santa Claus' application also carries over into the incoming Bush administration. When it comes to delivering presents for children, bipartisanship should be the guiding principle.
