Reno homeowners may hear a little quiet

Washoe County Airport Authority trustees last week approved contracts with five construction firms, which in June will begin soundproofing 200 homes in the Persimmon-Alder and Huffaker Hills neighborhoods.

The homes will get new windows and doors, as well as a system that provides fresh air without opening windows.

In the past five years, the airport authority has soundproofed about 125 homes. But a $4 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration will allow the number to be expanded this year.

"This will be the largest effort this airport has ever made in acoustically treating homes," said Sjohnna Knack, airport authority noise-abatement coordinator.

Another 330 homes still will be on the waiting list, however.
