Casino win healthy despite poor weather

ATLANTIC CITY -- Despite a spate of snowy, cold weather, New Jersey casinos posted a healthy showing in January, state regulators said Tuesday.

The 12 casinos won $305.9 million from gamblers last month, a 2.2 percent increase over the same period last year, the state Casino Control Commission reported. It was the second-best January for the casinos in the 21-year history of casino gambling in New Jersey.

The casinos, which rely on drive-in traffic and tour buses, traditionally suffer when bad weather makes travel difficult. Sometimes, however, they can make it up from snowbound gamblers who can't get out of town because of weather problems.

Of the $305.9 million, $212.2 million was lost at slot machines, $92.6 million at table games, the commission said.

The Atlantic City Hilton won $22.5 million, up 14.6 percent. Bally's Park Place won $38.7 million, up 14.4 percent. Caesars won $34.1 million, up 15.2 percent. Claridge Casino Hotel won $10.7 million, down 7.4 percent. Harrah's won $29.1 million, down 0.5 percent. Resorts Atlantic City won $14.4 million, down 13.4 percent.

The Sands won $16.8 million, down 5.5 percent. The Showboat won $24.6 million, down 10.3 percent. The Tropicana won $31.4 million, up 12.4 percent. Trump Marina won $19.7 million, down 11.9 percent. Trump Plaza won $23.7 million, down 12.7 percent and Trump Taj Mahal won $39.9 million, up 11.5 percent.
