Architects chosen to design facility

An architectural firm was chosen Tuesday to design Clark County's consolidated car rental facility that will be built on Gilespie Street just south of Interstate 215.

The County Commission agreed to allow the airport division to enter a contract agreement with Swisher & Hall architects of Las Vegas. The design services will cost about $5.5 million, according to a county report.

The architects will be responsible for designing a car wash and gas station that will be shared by the rental car businesses that move into the complex. They will also design the customer service building.

Opposition will be voiced to DOE

A resolution opposing the Yucca Mountain Draft Environmental Impact Statement will be sent to the Department of Energy, the Clark County Commission agreed Tuesday.

The board is concerned the report does not address potential dangers associated with low-level nuclear waste being transported through the Las Vegas Valley on the way to the Nevada Test Site. Commissioners said the federal agency used old population figures and outdated information about the county's road system.

Commission approves funding formula

The Clark County Commission approved the preliminary apportionment plan Tuesday for Metro Police spending that will be shared by the city of Las Vegas and the county.

The funding mix for Metro's uniformed and investigative division was determined by studying the population, calls for service and felony calls during the preceding year, a county report says.

During the fiscal year 2000-2001, the county will spend more than it has in the last two years. About 55.5 percent of the uniformed police budget will be paid for by the county; 58.8 percent of investigative services will be funded by the county and the county will pay 51.8 percent of the community services budget.

The Las Vegas City Council must also approve the apportionment plan.

Resolution supports line to California

The Clark County Commission followed the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition's lead in agreeing to sign a resolution in support of a proposed high-speed train that would link Las Vegas to Anaheim, Calif.

The project is expected to compete with air travel speeds and relieve congestion at McCarran International Airport and Interstate 15.

The California-Nevada Super Speed Train Commission has asked for support from all local governments in Southern Nevada to assist with securing Federal Railway Administration funds for a demonstration project.
