Right-wing Freedom Party topic of forum

A public forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at UNLV in the Classroom Building Complex, Rm C-213.

The forum entitled "Austria vs. The World" will cover the rise to power of the right-wing Freedom Party and its controversial leader, Jorg Haider. It will be led by a panel which will include Harald Gunther, deputy consul general of the Republic of Austria, Sigrid Sommer, honorary consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, Anne Bennett, a UNLV assistant professor of political science and Daniel Villanueva, a UNLV assistant professor of foreign languages. Knudson Academy holds performance

K.O. Knudson Middle School Academy of Creative Arts and Language will present the "Velveteen Rabbit" 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the school's new theater at 2400 Atlantic St. Tickets for the performances are available at the school 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and at the door. Call 799-7470.

Hospital gift shop needs volunteers

University Medical Center's Auxiliary, a nonprofit group that has raised money for the community's hospital since 1954, is recruiting volunteers for fund-raising.

The auxiliary has shifts open in the gift shop and needs new members to assist in other fund-raising activities held throughout the year.

Famed motivational speaker gives address

Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, a famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame, will be the guest speaker at the Goodwill Recognition Reception beginning 7 p.m. Thursday at the Clark County Government Center in the Pyramid. Ruettiger was the subject of a movie, "Rudy." For more information, call 597-1107.

Education program observes anniversary

The Clark County Anti-Tobacco Task Force is celebrating its one-year anniversary by educating the public on a proposed tobacco control plan for Clark County at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Opportunity Village, 6300 W. Oakey Blvd. Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley, co-chairwoman of the Task Force for the Fund for a Healthy Nevada, will deliver the keynote address.

Texas Station to host local beauties

Young women interested in becoming the next Miss Las Vegas are invited to an orientation meeting 10 a.m. Saturday at the Texas Station hotel-casino in the Armadillo Lounge.

There is no entry fee. To enter the pageant, a preliminary to the Miss America pageant, a young woman must be between 17 and 24 years old and a U.S. citizen who has never been married or given birth.

The Miss Las Vegas Pageant will be held 2 p.m. March 25 at the Texas Station. Call 338-8462.

Judge Weiss offers immigration talk

Immigration Judge Irene Weiss will speak to the Jewish Genealogical Society West at 1 p.m. Sunday in the first floor multipurpose room of the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Family shares photos of great composer

Judith Anne Still, daughter of African American composer William Grant Still, will present rare photographs from her father's archives at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road and at 7 p.m. Saturday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. After the lecture, the Sierra Winds will play highlights from the William Grant Still collection.
