Corrections officer who shot dog faces civil lawsuit

A corrections officer who shot and killed his neighbor's dog has been named in a civil lawsuit by the canine's owner.

John Stroz was named in the lawsuit filed Tuesday by Judi Burns of Henderson. She is seeking unspecified damages.

Stroz pleaded guilty in December to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful killing of an animal. He was ordered to complete 400 hours of community service with an animal shelter over the next year.

Burns said she has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder following the Nov. 22 shooting of her border collie, Rosie.

Stroz shot the dog despite the pleadings of its owner, claiming the dog had previously attacked him. Police had no records of any complaints about the dog, who had escaped from her fenced-in back yard when she was shot.
