State agency aids Holocaust victims

"We know there are many Holocaust survivors in Nevada," state Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman said Tuesday. "Many of these are an aging population, and this may be our last chance to help them recover their losses."

Molasky-Arman is working with the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims to resolve claims of victims of the Holocaust.

The commission was established in October 1998 by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in conjunction with several European insurance companies, representatives of Jewish organizations and Israel.

Beginning this week, families of Holocaust victims who held insurance policies in Europe during World War II that never were honored can submit new claims to the international commission.

There is no charge for claimants to file and it is not necessary to hire a lawyer. All claims must be filed by Feb. 1, 2002, and they will be resolved within two years of filing.

Individuals who believe they may have claims can request a claims packet. For the packet, call the Division of Insurance at 702-486-4009, extension 4009, in Las Vegas, or write the international commission at P.O. Box 163, Wall Street Station, New York, N.Y., 10268.
