CATS pounce on fugitives in busy new year

The Las Vegas Valley's Criminal Apprehension Team, or CATS, has been busy in the new year, making 19 arrests since Jan. 1.

The fugitive apprehension team is made up of law enforcement officials from the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Metro Police, Henderson Police and North Las Vegas Police.

"We might be a little busier than normal since the new year, but we're always making a lot of arrests," CATS Sgt. Al Cervantes said. "Last year we had 863 arrests."

On Wednesday the team made five arrests, including a woman who tried to escape by jumping from her second-story balcony.

Cindy Cothron, 37, is charged with two counts of grand larceny and possession of stolen property, and was approached by CATS officers just after 7 p.m. in the 3500 block of Biela Avenue, near Pecos and Russell roads.

"She had visited the Clark County Detention Center before, and I guess she didn't care for the facilities because she didn't want to go back," Cervantes said.

Cothron suffered a broken hip in her leap from the balcony, and after being treated at University Medical Center she was booked into the detention center.

Also arrested Wednesday were: David Duszynski, 29, charged with robbery and home invasion in Las Vegas; John Lett, 38, charged with felony theft in Donaldsonville, La.; Rene Hinojosa, 39, charged with battery with substantial bodily harm, and Anthony Corniel, 37, charged with burglary and assault with a deadly weapon in North Las Vegas.

The CATS team made its 19th arrest of the new year in North Las Vegas on Thursday.

Victor Garcia, 20, was arrested at an apartment complex at 3300 Civic Center Drive at about 1:30 p.m. Garcia was wanted in Los Angeles on two attempted murder charges.
