Businesswomen's group to hear address

Diana Woloson will speak on "creative visualization" 6 p.m. Thursday to the Pinon Pines Chapter of the American Business Women's Association at Marie Callendar's, 4875 W. Flamingo Road.

Scenic hikes of varying difficulty set

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitor's Center. Call 363-1921.

Some coming programs:

Grand Circle: Quarter Loop: Scenic 3-mile hike Saturday includes the parts of the Moenkopi, PLAD and Calico I to the fee booth trails.

Iron Man Series Part 1 of 4 -- White Rock Loop: A 6-mile moderate to strenuous hike Saturday to discover the White Rock loop.

Calico Tank Hike: A 2-mile moderately strenuous hike Sunday over sandstone formations to a natural tenaja.

Program planned on fiscal responsibility

Area middle schools can register through Jan. 24 for "Take Your Parents to School Day," a program sponsored by financial firm Salomon Smith Barney.

The purpose of the program, to be held Feb. 15-17, is to teach youngsters fiscal responsibility. It includes two days of classroom instruction followed by a day with a Salomon Smith Barney consultant discussing the financial markets and introducing a national stock portfolio contest.

Registration in the national program is limited to the first 50 schools. To register go to the Young Investors Network website (salomonsmithbarney.com/yin) or by calling a local Salomon Smith Barney branch.

Workshops on tap in herbs and journals

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services is offering an herbs and aging class on Tuesday for people 55 and up.

A master herbalist will be on hand to teach and answer questions. The cost is $3 for the class plus $1 for registration.

Also, a journal writing workshop is being offered at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 20, 27 and Feb. 3 and 10 at the Derfelt Senior Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave. Call 229-6601.

Residents urged to recycle old directories

The January 2000 Sprint phone book is being distributed throughout the Las Vegas Valley, and residents are encouraged to recycle their old phone books.

Those who have not received a copy by the end of the month may call (888) 256-5647.

In addition to residential and business listings, the phone book features a five-page Internet index and a two-page guide to understanding Internet questions, such as what is the Internet, the World Wide Web and what are search engines.

Medical Society plans help for Make-A-Wish

The Clark County Medical Society will hold its 2000 charity dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Four Seasons Hotel.

The annual dinner raises money for local charities. Proceeds from this year's dinner will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada. The society hopes to help the foundation grant at least five wishes of local children.

Students at Crestwood Elementary School

raised over $1,300 for Signing for Kids, a program of Sunrise Children's Foundation that teaches third, fourth and fifth graders to sign through song and dance. The students raised the money by holding a walk-a-thon.
