Robinson nets four commitments over the weekend

UNLV football coach John Robinson picked up four more verbal commitments over the weekend, including a pair of defensive stars from Los Angeles City 4-A champion Carson High School.

Strong safety Ashley Subingsubing (5-11, 185) and linebacker Michael Crowder-Jones (5-11, 230) both canceled their remaining recruiting trips after telling Robinson they wanted to join the Rebels.

Subingsubing had 15 tackles in Carson's LA City 4-A title win over Los Angeles Crenshaw and also returned a blocked punt 58 yards for a touchdown. He also had trips lined up to Utah State and Idaho State.

"Everybody at UNLV was very nice and the facilities were real nice," Subingsubing said. "And it's only a 45-minute plane ride away from home, so my family can come and watch me play."

Crowder-Jones had 109 tackles, including eight for a loss, and two sacks for the Colts en route to all-city honors. An outstanding student with a 3.7 GPA and 1160 SAT score, he was originally rumored to be headed to Pac-10 champion Stanford.

"But (Stanford) called me in December and told me they had already had filled their linebacker requirements," Crowder-Jones said. "By then a lot of schools had stopped recruiting me because they heard I was going to Stanford. UNLV was the only one that stuck with me."

Crowder-Jones, who canceled a trip to Iowa State and was also being recruited again by Washington State, may not enroll at UNLV until next January because the Rebels are fast running out of available scholarships. Still, the hard-hitting linebacker didn't seem too fazed by the fact he may have to wait an extra semester to get his free ride.

"Coach Robinson didn't try to sugarcoat anything, which I really respect," Crowder-Jones said. "The whole atmosphere at UNLV was very impressive."

Subingsubing was a first team "Dream Team" pick by the Long Beach Press-Telegram while Crowder-Jones was a second team pick.

UNLV also picked up a commitment from all-San Diego County offensive tackle Jimmy Zoll (6-7, 290) of Santana High in Santee as well from Greg Tooms, one of the top junior college defensive backs on the West Coast. Tooms (5-10, 185) is from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Zoll, who also visited Fresno State and had trips lined up to Colorado State, New Mexico and Boise State, helped lead the Sultans to an 11-1 record and a San Diego CIF Division II semifinal berth. A very agile big man, he averages 16 points and 10 rebounds as a starter for the Santana basketball team.

"We thought a lot of him," said Dick Lascola of the Fallbrook-based Scouting Evaluation Assn. "He's a big kid who is a good pass-blocker. He has long arms and shows good extension."

Tooms, who also visited Missouri and New Mexico and had a trip planned for Oklahoma State, prepped at Hawthorne (Calif.) High where he was a teammate of Rebel offensive guard Tony Terrell.

* Oregon beat Arizona State for one of the West Coast's top safeties, Marley Tucker (6-1, 200) of CIF Southern Section Division I champ Long Beach Poly.

* USC helped shore up its offensive line with the addition of tackle Blair Jones (6-8, 270) of Newport Harbor (Calif.) High and center Carlos Acosta (6-4, 270) of Moorpark JC. UNLV FOOTBALL
