UMC offering class for area teens

University Medical Center will offer a free Safe Sitter Class open to Clark County teens between 11 and 13, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the UMC's Bright Beginning's classroom, 1815 W. Charleston Blvd.

Parents are asked to call early to reserve their child's space in this two-day program.

The Safe Sitter program is a 14-hour course designed to give teens the necessary skill to be proficient baby sitters. Teens learn first aid, choking and rescue breathing as well as growth and development of young children. To register, call Betty Lucas at 383-3848.

Party planned Sunday at Flamingo center

Adults 55 and older are invited to the West Flamingo Senior Center's party at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the center's multipurpose room, at Jones and Flamingo.

The cost is $3. Advance registration is required no later than Wednesday. Call 455-7742.

Event will benefit Clark County Museum

The ninth annual vintage, classic and a special interest motorcycle auction to benefit the Clark County Museum is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at the Tropicana's Casino Grand Ballroom.

The auction will continue Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults; free for children 12 and under.

Hospice course

The Nathan Adelson Hospice Volunteer Education Course, a program offering 18 hours of education to provide the tools and resources needed to offer terminally ill patients and their families emotional and practical support, is being offered 9 a.m-3 p.m. Saturday at the hospice, 4141 S. Safari Club banquet

Safari Club International's Desert Las Vegas Chapter will hold its 13th annual banquet Feb. 11 at the Stardust hotel-casino. Call 731-2330.

Nominations are due for women's honors

The attorney general's office is seeking nominations for the sixth annual Nevada Women's Role Model Awards.

Nominations must be completed and postmarked by Feb. 11.

The recipients, five from Northern Nevada and five from Southern Nevada will be announced in March, Women's History Month.

Handmade boat takes top prize

Jason W. Hogue received $500 for his winning entry in the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department's The Art of the Toy contest and exhibit.

Hogue's entry, entitled "Imagination," was a 33-inch handmade boat with working lights, propeller and moving crewman below the deck. The boat was crafted of wood, metal and other materials and was dedicated to the craftmanship that could be found in toys of an earlier era.
