Governor to tour Yucca, Test Site

CARSON CITY -- Gov. Kenny Guinn says he will be the first Nevada governor to tour Yucca Mountain and the visit today will help him push Nevada's opposition to the proposed high-level nuclear repository.

The governor also will visit the Nevada Test Site to look at the potential for new scientific and business opportunities.

"Getting a first-hand look at the Yucca Mountain will enable me to more effectively communicate our state's adamant opposition to the storage of the nation's nuclear waste in Nevada," he said.

The governor will also tour Area 18 at the Test Site. This is the location of the proposed Kistler Aerospace program and the VentureStar project, which is envisioned as the eventual replacement of the space shuttle.

"It is my goal to actively pursue the development of a new mission for the Nevada Test Site, which presents a tremendous opportunity for scientific and business development for our state," he said.
