Groundwater okay in UNR tests

Academy co-director Denise Baclawski called that good news because it means efforts to protect the groundwater are working.

The additional tests were ordered after a groundwater sample taken June 13 showed a reportable level of the petroleum byproduct benzene.

SRK Consulting of Reno collected additional samples last week from each of the eight monitoring wells at the life-safety training facility.

While the tests showed no reportable amounts of any contaminants, two indicated trace amounts of MTBE that were about one-tenth the amount considered reportable.

Baclawski says even that amount is too much and the academy will continue testing and will proceed with improvements to avoid a future problem.
