New justice center to be named for Evans

Commissioner Chairman Ted Short said Evans was a real champion of women and children in Nevada. In 1998, she chaired the first legislative commission's subcommittee to study the system of juvenile justice in Nevada.

The entire complex will be named the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center, but the detention portion of the facility will continue to be called "Wittenberg Hall" in memory of Helen Wittenberg. Wittenberg was an early advocate for the first juvenile detention center in Washoe County.
