Columnist Elizabeth Foyt: Clark High graduate secures academic honor

Patsaporn "Patty" Rotroxsa, a recent Clark High School graduate, was among some 6,000 students to apply for the Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship. She and other honor students found their application forms at the Simon Marketplace at Simon malls nationwide, including the Forum Shops at Caesars.

Scholarship recipients were chosen by evaluation of the applicants' academic performance, leadership skills, participation in school and community activities and financial need. This was the first year the scholarship has been offered.

Jeffrey Silbert, general manager of the Forum Shops, in ceremonies held last week, led welcoming remarks and introduced Patty to the assembled dignitaries, merchants and friends. In addition to her one-time award of the $1,500 scholarship check, the young scholar was also given a variety of college-oriented gifts from the Forum Shops management staff in recognition of her scholastic achievements.

Further praise was given in brief remarks by Maureen Crampton, marketing director of the Forum Shops, who announced that Patty will attend Pasadena City College in California with a goal of a career in international law.

Campy decision

In a city known for its many generous efforts comes word of Nathan Adelson Hospice's decision to expand its Camp Mariposa program. A weekend program for young children who have lost someone significant in their lives, the camp offers a chance for healing among those with similar losses.

This year in addition to making friends with the other 75 children at Camp Mariposa, participants will also be given a special stuffed animal to help comfort them upon arrival.

Through $20 donations generated by the community, Nathan Adelson Hospice plans to give each camper a "Faithful Friend," a new stuffed animal. These plush and cuddly pals will stay with the children through the camp experience and later become a reminder of their weekend at Camp Mariposa.

The camp experience for children ages 6-11 is coordinated by trained counselors and slated for Sept. 22-24 at Potosi Pines Children's Camp. For more information on the camp or to pledge support for the "Faithful Friends" program, please call the Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation at 796-3133.

Pearson awarded

Best wishes to Alice Pearson, longtime Las Vegas resident and community leader. Alice was recently awarded the prestigious "Life Membership" award by the Salvation Army at its annual dinner at the MGM Grand. Not lightly given, this award is bestowed upon those who have contributed time and effort to the Army's programs and have been active in other civic endeavors.

In 1965 Alice was a founding member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, an organization well-recognized for their many activities, including the annual Christmas Doll Tea, food and clothing drives and employment efforts.

A past president of the auxiliary, Alice continues to serve on its Advisory Board and as a volunteer. She is also a past president of Mesquite Club and a multiterm adviser to the Junior Mesquite Club and remains an active Mesquite Club member, often chairing their community projects and outreach endeavors. Alice and her late husband, Arthur Pearson, came to Las Vegas in the late 1950s, when our community's population hovered near 80,000.

Being generous

It may have been a hot summer thus far, but the cool green dollars showered on 31 local organizations and charities were more welcome than rain.

In the past two months in support of community programs, Station Casinos has donated $112,000, with the largest gift made to the "I Have A Dream" Foundation, which received a $28,000, 15-passenger van for transporting at-risk youth to educational programs throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Similarly, Inner City Games of Las Vegas was given $20,000 to support its Head Coach program. Mark Brown, executive vice president for community and government relations for Station Casinos, also announced gifts and funding to agencies including the American Cancer Society, Nature Conservancy of Nevada, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, UNLV's athletic program for its Light Project at Rebel Park and Vanderburg Elementary's Biosphere Project, to name just a few.

Station Casinos can be justly proud of its corporation and truly stellar record of giving, which has provided more than $260,000 to local efforts this year alone.

Goin' to Utah

Wondering about all the excitement in Utah this summer? Certainly the 2000 summer season at the Utah Shakespearean Festival is worthy of all the praise and attention, with many Southern Nevadans gladly driving the brief hours to Cedar City for the wondrous selection of seven theatrical productions.

Several events have had special appeal for our residents, among them a splendid ceremony and reception marking the arrival home of the Tony Award, given to the Utah Shakespearen Festival as America's Outstanding Regional Theatre this year.

The Antoinette Perry Award (the formal name for the Tony) is bestowed annually for distinguished achievement in theater and is the most sought-after award in live theater, truly an equivalent to an Academy Award for film. And with the prestigious award comes a gift of $25,000 from Clairol Inc., a most desired contribution to the festival that seeks to build a massive center for the performing arts in the coming years.

Las Vegan Dr. Allen R. Anes, who serves on the festival's multistate board of governors, helped underwrite the celebration party and provided funding for the commemorative champagne flutes given guests on this happy occasion.

Lending their efforts as well were fellow board of governor members Linda Casey, Nancy Slitz, Rodney Leavitt and vice chair/president-elect Thomas A. Thomas, all of Las Vegas.

Celebrating this long-awaited moment in the festival's 39-year history were also Board of Governor Emertis from Las Vegas, Susan Tompkins, Edythe Katz Yarchever and Corrine Tiberti.

Recognized on this occasion and during opening ceremonies were many individuals and corporate sponsors representing Southern Nevada, including KHWY 98.9-FM, which sponsored "Noises Off" this season, as well as Frances Saxton and KLVX Channel 10, to name just a few.
