Letter: Prayer ruling a real blessing

I will never forget the "invocation" given prior to my son's last game as a senior on the Lake Dallas football team. A Baptist preacher (he made that very clear) proselytized for 6.5 minutes (I timed him) over the loudspeaker. At the end of his "invocation" he invited all in attendance to drop by his Baptist church after the game for a prayer session and free pizza.

This is not an unusual occurrence in the South. It is a regular schedule. And it is not about nonsectarian invocations, or prayers, which most people might find acceptable or at least be able to tolerate them. This is an area (high school sports events) which the Southern Baptists have targeted for recruitment, just as they have targeted Las Vegas (according to a recent Sun article), the Mormons, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and all people and religions that do not share their fundamentalist Christian beliefs.

God bless the Supreme Court.
