Charter school's OK near

The Clark County School Board has approved a fourth charter school for Southern Nevada, provided the school gets its curriculum and facility in order within a month.

The Techworld Public Charter School has until the School Board's July 27 meeting to provide the district proof that its curriculum will be in line with Nevada standards and that its facility is up to code, Craig Kadlub, the district's liaison for charter schools, said.

At a special meeting Monday night, the School Board gave conditional approval for the Washington D.C.-based school that will focus on teaching skills for high-tech, computer-related vocations.

Charter schools are privately run institutions that operate with public funding and are required to follow school district and state guidelines for education.

The district currently has two charter schools in operation and approved a third earlier this month.

Keystone Charter School in Sandy Valley and Odyssey Charter School opened a year ago. The Las Vegas Charter School for the Deaf plans to open this fall.

The Techworld school also is slated to open this fall at 401 S. Maryland Parkway, just north of Charleston Boulevard.

The School Board also wants Techworld President Daanen Strachen to have his financing for the school in order by its next meeting, Kadlub said, noting that issue has been discussed at prior meetings.

Techworld, which plans to open with sixth and seventh grades and eventually grow to include high school grades, also operates schools in Miami and Washington, D.C.
