Fireworks planned at Seastrand

The city of North Las Vegas will celebrate the grand opening of the James K. Seastrand Park at 4 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Centennial Parkway and Camino Eldorado.

The celebration will include activities such as youth soccer and tennis clinics, music and entertainment and a parade.

It will conclude with a fireworks show at 9 p.m.

Mobile home park kids to get toys

Disadvantaged children will receive a "Christmas in July" at 1 p.m. July 4 at the Purple Sage Mobile Home Park.

Desert Auto Body, Desert Dodge, Pride Village, the Rev. John 3:16 Cook and Magickal Marissa have teamed up to bring toys, games, refreshments and entertainment to the needy children who reside at the park.

Donations may be brought to the park at 4362 E. Lake Mead Blvd.

Challenger shuttle whistleblower to speak

One of the engineers who warned against launching the space shuttle Challenger because of joint-seal problems in the rocket boosters will speak at UNLV Wednesday.

Roger Boisjoly was among five technical troubleshooters for the Morton Thiokol rocket engine company, whose recommendation to postpone the launch was overruled by management -- with deadly results.

After the joint-seals failed, killing all seven astronauts aboard, Boisjoly testified before the commission investigating the disaster and exposed technical and managment problems, said Robert Boehm, UNLV professor of mechanical engineering.

Boisjoly will speak at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Beam Engineering Complex, Room A-107, for the engineering ethics component of a National Science Foundation-funded summer research program.

After-Mom March

Women who joined the Million Mom March Rally are gathering at 2:30 and 7 p.m. Thursday at the Clark County Health District, 625 Shadow Lane, to learn more about local problems with gun violence and develop strategies to reduce it. Free classes for seniors

Senior Advantage will be offering the following free classes: Cataract education 11 a.m.-noon July 6; Assisted Living, Skilled and Rehabilitation Facilities 10-11 a.m. July 7; and Hair Styles for Summer 2-3 p.m. July 12, all at the Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, 2075 E. Flamingo Road.

Candidates night

A candidates night will be held 6 p.m. Thursday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 E. Lake Mead Blvd. It is an opportunity to find out where candidates stand on issues. Call 399-3553.

Grease

The Super Summer Theatre performances of "Grease" at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park on July 12 will offer a slice of cake in exchange for the donation of a jar of peanut butter for the Salvation Army's emergency food bank. Call Sumner Dodge at 870-4430.

Revised website offers new information

Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex revised its Internet website, which contains information about the four Southern Nevada Wildlife Refuges, including Desert National Wildlife Range, Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge and Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Maps and brochures can also be found on the site (www.rl.fws.gov/desert/default.htm).

The refuges are part of the National Wildlife Refuge System administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For more information, call (702) 646-3401.

Immunizations Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 15 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, June 28 through July 3. The Clark County Health District will be closed Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
