Columnist Peter Benton: Durants win club event

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

On a beautiful day and on a course in pristine condition, Leo and Lori Durant posted a gross score of 77 to win the Las Vegas Club's 18th annual Husband and Wife Club Championship.

Format for the 18-hole event was Pinehurst Scotch-Foursome. Both partners tee off on each hole, select one of the two tee shots and hit alternate shots until the ball is holed. One half of the team's combined handicap is deducted from the 18-hole score to determine their net score.

In the A flight, Bruce and Charlotte Ashworth eked out a narrow victory, their net 64 edging Paul and Susie Schofield (65). Defending champions Pat and Georgie Laverty placed third with 67.

Jack and Halina Vergiels, along with Len and Clyde Serfustini, shared B flight honors with 68.5s. Andy and Janet Blumen placed third with 69.

The C flight victors with a scintillating 62.5 were Frank and Marilyn Reed. Don and Janet Mackay followed with 66 while third place went to Bill and Lianne McKown (67.5).

Jerry Bartman and Joanne Stevens' 68 was tops in the Guys and Dolls flight. Ron Hansen and Rhonda Mushkin finished second with a 69.

* WELLS FARGO: The annual Wells Fargo Golf Classic, benefiting Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start on April 6 at the Stallion Mountain Country Club.

* AJGA IN LV: The American Junior Golf Association is a national organization dedicated to the development of young men and women, ages 13-18, through competitive junior golf.

The purpose of the AJGA is to provide positive life experiences for aspiring junior golfers through competitive golf, while setting high standards to preserve the integrity and tradition of the game.

This organization holds numerous tournaments throughout the country, including two here in Las Vegas. The Las Founders Legacy Jr. is held at the Legacy Golf Club each June and the Compaq/Jr. All Star Classic Series has been added for Aug. 7-9 at Angel Park.

AJGA events give juniors the opportunity to compete against other top young golfers in the country plus potential exposure to college coaches. Many of these tournaments are used as a basis for national junior rankings.

A number of Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association members have competed successfully in AJGA events, earning top-five finishes and national rankings.
