Disabled man dies in mobile home fire

A disabled man was killed early today in a mobile home fire in an aging northeast Las Vegas complex known for dilapidated units on close-set lots.

Clark County Fire Department spokesman Steve La-Sky said the man, a 44-year-old Las Vegas resident whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was found near the front door of his single-wide home in the Atacamatarn Mobile Home Park, 3726 E. Lake Mead Blvd., near Pecos Road.

The man's electronic wheelchair was parked just outside the door, La-Sky said.

"Firefighters did a good job containing the blaze to the one home because the home next door was just a few feet away," La-Sky said, noting that units from Clark County, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas responded to the 5 a.m. fire. "The conditions in there were really bad."

The mobile home park is believed to have been built in the 1950s, La-Sky said, noting that an estimated dollar damage of the property has not been determined.

Earlier today, three people were displaced in an arson fire in their home at 4325 Edward Ave., near West Lake Mead Boulevard and Rancho Drive, city of Las Vegas fire officials said.

The blaze was deliberately set in two automobiles, destroying the cars and carport and causing significant damage to the house, officials said.

Escaping the 2:50 a.m. blaze uninjured were a 50-year-old man, his 29-year-old daughter and his 6-year-old granddaughter. They were awakened by a smoke detector alarm and the explosions of the tires, fire officials said.

The damage was estimated at $100,000. The displaced residents told fire officials they had no idea why someone would break into the cars and set them ablaze. They are staying with relatives, city fire offficals said.

Today's fires are the latest in a rash of fires throughout the Las Vegas Valley this month that have taken the lives of five people and at least three pets.
