Consolidation of Washoe fire departments moves closer

It spells out the terms for merging city and county firefighters into one department.

While officials wouldn't release details of the deal, Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin said on Tuesday the four-year contract is a crucial step toward what's expected to be a money-saving merger.

Griffin said the city agreed to a final union demand that sources close to negotiations told the Reno Gazette-Journal was sick leave.

The next step is for the firefighters to decide on April 4 whether to vote on the contract. The agreement won't be made public until the following day when the contract is given to Washoe County Commissioners, who also serve as the fire district board.

The county fire board and its firefighters' union also must approve the contract.
